We have always wanted to do a piece of furniture using chalkboard paint. With our limited DIY budget we always try to think outside the box. Guess what? You don't have to use expensive chalk paint or go through the hassle of making your own with non sanded tile grout. Gasp! Yes, it is faux chalk paint!
This beauty was rescued from the curb. As you can see it was in rough shape. It showed years of wear and tear. The drawers are not aligned properly and some of the molding separated. The drawers open and close though so it is still usable.
We cleaned her up, removed all the drawer hardware and spray painted the handles a glossy black. While the handles were drying we sanded the dresser and then added two coats of primer. This is very important! Do not skip this step. Once the second coat of primer was on we let the dresser set overnight to make sure the primer dried completly.
The next day we painted her up with FLAT latex paint. That's all we did. No special formulas, no chalkboard paint. Worked like a charm!

For us, it is absolutely impossible to use plain old chalk and write neatly in cursive. We wanted more control so we used Chalk Ink we found at Michaels crafts.
We wrote the words Underwear, Bras, Socks, T-Shirts and Shorts in French. It is a little more discreet than walking in your bedroom and seeing the words Bra's and Underwear written all over your dresser. We're sure Hubby would appreciate that!
Total Cost of this project was basically nothing since we had everything on hand already.

Very sweet. I was thinking of doing this on the inside of my daughters' bureau so they would put their clothes away in the proper drawers. It was because I didn't necessarily want "underwear" written on the furniture! :) But you have found a great solution. Thanks for the inspiration!

LOVE It. The chalk in pen form can leave a perm. stain if you don't have multi coats of chalk paint on, btw (found out the hard way!)

Ha! I used to make my own chalkboards (I taught decorative painting in the 80's) that same way. Once the paint is "seasoned" with the chalk it is good to go.
I also know that you can get really good coverage with Gesso. But a ready made paint mix in a can is oh so easy.

You know girls, I have wondered about this. That chalk paint is so expensive. The claim to fame seems to be that you can paint without primer or sanding. Wonder if that would work with any flat paint.

I love your faux chalk paint dresser. Is your method waterproof? Traditional chalk paint is not waterproof. I want to paint my son's activity table and love the look of chalk paint, but feel like waterproofing is a necessity.
