Two Dollar Curb Art

You know the song "Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend" from the movie Gentlemen Prefer Blonds? It's iconic.

Marilyn Monroe prefers Diamonds. We prefer the diamonds in the rough that we find at the Curb.

To us "The Curb is a Girls Best Friend".

I found this on the side of the road when I was on my way home from visiting my grandma. There was a whole pile of them but I only had time to grab one because I was stopped in the middle of two way road  with my hazards on and a car was coming. EEK!

The window measured almost five feet tall and was painted a forest green color. Not our choice of color but it was wood had no damage and was in great condition.

I really didn't have an idea for the window when I picked it up until I found these two calendars at the Thrift Store for $1.00 each.

I immediately thought of my sister who worships Marilyn Monroe. She has at least four or five huge pieces of Marilyn Monroe artwork in her house plus books, cups and even bottles of Marilyn Monroe wine! These photos from the calendar would look gorgeous displayed in the window frame. Creating a piece of art for my sister would be perfect!

After cleaning the window I used one tube of high gloss acrylic red craft paint to paint over the Forest Green. I did not sand or prime the frame because I was out of sandpaper and primer and didn't feel like going to the store. The craft paint adhered very nicely though. I only used one tube since I was going for a more distressed look. If you prefer full coverage I would recommend using 2-3 tubes of the craft paint.

I used a Cigar Box lid as my template to cut the photos out to be the same exact size. I traced around the cigar box with a pen and then cut the photos out.

Self adhesive black photo corners were used on all four corners of every picture to mount the pictures and provide a more finished look. Once the corners were added, I used my hot glue gun to glue the back of the corners to the front of the windows. I really wanted to glue them to the back side but you could see the glue through the glass. Bummer!

I had two of these distressed white decorative wood pieces in my garage. I simply hot glued them to the top and bottom of the window frame to add some interest and detail. .

And that's it.  Super easy! My sister loved it!

Total cost of this project was $2.00. I had all of the other supplies on hand. Not too bad for a $2.00 piece of art.

Until next time.....

  19. I LOVE it! I love old windows for any kind of cool project. Ha, you totally sounded like me, pulling over in a danger zone, just to load up a bunch of garbage. My kids think it is "normal" to suddenly pull over and throw something from the side of the road into the back of my van. Poor children.
